Teaching fractions to 5 and 6 year olds can be a bit confusing, but eating them is another matter entirely. We started off by breaking graham crackers into fourths, which is fun. But the big excitement came when we drew fractions on pancakes using icing. Yum! (If you are 5!)
I have to give Mrs. Donald credit for this idea. We used microwavable pancakes and little tubes of icing. Each kid at the table made a different fraction. We are only teaching halves, thirds, and fourths, but this activity could be expanded for older kids. Be sure to read a book like Give Me Half or Eating Fractions first.
