What? You don't celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day? John Chapman was born September 26, 1774. It's one of our favorite holidays in kindergarten.
To celebrate, we talked about tall tales and read a great Johnny Appleseed book. Then, we tasted a variety of apples. This year's choices were Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Braeburn.
After tasting, the kids recorded their reactions on a worksheet by drawing a face. The taster above seemed to love the first two, thought the Golden Delicious was just OK, and did not like the Braeburn.
After trying the 4 apples, everyone decided on their favorite apple and added an apple to the graph. From the looks of things, Braeburn was the favorite, despite the above taster's reaction.
Older kids could write about their reactions - this would be a great activity to use adjectives. Or perhaps inspire their own tall tale.
